A clear value for your Townsville business decision

A contractor with a strong project year, a logistics operator with a concentrated customer base and a professional practice with recurring fees need different questions answered. IBV™ provides independent business valuations for Townsville owners and their advisers, connecting the conclusion to the actual earnings, operating requirements and ownership interest—not a postcode-based rule of thumb.

Dr Patrick Hillenbrand, AVI Certified Business Valuer, works directly with you. We agree the purpose, valuation date, intended users and scope before commencing. Your signed report records the reasoning and material limitations. Our IBV™ Independence Guarantee keeps the professional fee independent of the value concluded. We are not bound by APES 225 but voluntarily adhere to its valuation guidance.

Separate regional opportunity from business-level evidence

Townsville City Council describes a North Queensland business and investment setting connected to industry, transport, defence and infrastructure. That context can help explain who your customers are and why work arises. It cannot establish that your business has won a contract, has spare delivery capacity or will earn a particular margin.

We distinguish existing operations from proposed expansion. For a supplier linked to industrial or port activity, examine the actual customer agreements and services provided. For city-based retail, hospitality or health businesses, review their own demand, occupancy costs and staffing. Proximity to a major employer or transport corridor is not, by itself, evidence of transferable goodwill.

If turnover increased during a large project, ask whether that work is repeatable. A valuation should explain the evidence behind sustainable earnings instead of treating the most recent result as permanent.

Assess awarded work, not an uncommitted pipeline

Prepare a contract register separating executed agreements, confirmed purchase orders, approved variations and tenders awaiting a decision. Include remaining terms, renewal provisions, termination rights and change-of-ownership requirements. An attractive tender pipeline can support a discussion of prospects, but is not secured revenue.

Consider an illustrative Townsville maintenance contractor whose largest customer contributes much of its annual profit. A multi-year relationship may be valuable, yet the agreement could permit early termination or require consent when ownership changes. We need the contract and trading history to assess continuity—not an assumption that a longstanding customer must stay.

Examine the resources needed to replace completed work. Can equipment and employees serve other customers? Does the owner personally control the tender process or technical approvals? Distinguish a demonstrated ability to win recurring work from a proposed diversification strategy. Neither a regional infrastructure announcement nor a successful past bid guarantees the next award.

Reconcile profit with funding and operating capacity

Project-based businesses may pay wages, materials and subcontractors well before collecting invoices. Review monthly receivables, retentions, work in progress and supplier commitments alongside profit. A profitable contract can still require substantial working capital. The report should state how normal operating funding is treated so an owner does not mistake business value for net cash proceeds.

For transport and industrial service operators, identify fleet ownership, utilisation, maintenance and replacement needs. Examine site access, storage arrangements and dependencies on particular premises. Equipment included in an earnings-based assessment should not be added again without an appropriate reconciliation.

Where disruptions have affected trading, document the dates, lost work, recovery costs and insurance treatment. Do not assume every North Queensland business carries an identical risk adjustment. Operational records and workable contingency arrangements are more useful than a generalised regional discount.

Make the handover and earnings adjustments credible

An owner-operated business often combines management, sales and technical responsibilities in one person. List those duties and identify what a buyer or remaining partner would need to replace. Owner remuneration is not automatically an add-back: continuing work has a cost, even if family members have historically performed it without a commercial salary.

Collect recent financial statements, current management accounts, contract records, leases and an ownership schedule. Explain related-party costs and one-off items. If records need reconciliation, involve your accountant early. Missing evidence may affect what can be concluded; choosing a particular engagement does not make that evidence unnecessary.

Match the report to who relies on it

For a proposed sale, our selling-a-business valuation service supports informed negotiations without promising a sale price. A share or unit valuation focuses on the identified interest, rather than assuming a percentage of whole-business value. A restructure valuation is coordinated around the instructions and requirements confirmed by your advisers.

See our Fixed Professional Fees for the complete comparison. Calculated Value is $2,450 + GST for eligible personal planning only. Limited Scope Conclusion of Value is $4,950 + GST and is the most common engagement; shareholder changes, restructures, tax and family law require at least Limited Scope. Full Conclusion is quoted on instructions. Fees are payable on signing. Calculated and Limited Scope generally take 5–7 business days after complete information and signed engagement; Full Conclusion timing is agreed individually.

Townsville enquiries are handled remotely through document review and scheduled discussions; we do not have a local office. IBV does not accept expert-witness or court-appointed valuation instructions. Tell us your purpose and deadline so we can confirm the appropriate next step.

Frequently asked questions

How is a Townsville contractor with one major customer valued?

Examine the customer's share of earnings, contract duration, renewal history and termination or ownership-change provisions. Consider the resources and realistic opportunities to replace lost work. A longstanding relationship matters, but does not eliminate concentration risk or justify an unexplained standard discount.

Can Townsville infrastructure announcements count as future revenue?

Not by themselves. Separate regional announcements and tender prospects from awarded contracts and confirmed orders held by the business. Verify margins, timing, delivery capacity and capital needs before using prospective activity in valuation assumptions.

How should a Townsville business present its tender pipeline?

List each opportunity with its status and distinguish bids from signed work, approved variations and recurring services. Provide evidence of historical conversion and delivery capacity where relevant. An unawarded tender should not be described as secured income.

Do defence-related customers guarantee a higher Townsville business value?

No. Assess the actual agreement, procurement requirements, continuity, margins and concentration. A customer's sector or reputation does not establish guaranteed revenue or transferable rights. Any proposed expansion must be distinguished from demonstrated trading.

Why do retentions and work in progress matter to a Townsville contractor?

They can affect when profit converts to cash and the funding required to complete work. Reconcile project records to the accounts and review collection timing, remaining obligations and normal working capital. A profitable contract can still require substantial operating finance.

Is a Townsville transport fleet valued separately from goodwill?

The report must identify the subject and explain fleet treatment under the selected approach. Owned and financed vehicles, maintenance needs and surplus equipment should be distinguished. Adding fleet value to an earnings-based conclusion without reconciliation may count the same productive benefit twice.

How are unusual project profits adjusted in a Townsville valuation?

Review the job's timing, margin, resources and recurrence against the wider trading record. Establish whether the result represents normal work, an exceptional contract or a change in the business model. Do not remove costs or retain revenue simply to create a preferred earnings figure.

What if the departing Townsville owner wins all the contracts?

Document tendering, sales, technical and relationship duties, together with staff capability and proposed handover arrangements. Necessary replacement costs and continuity assumptions should be considered. A proposed handover is not the same as proof that the business already operates independently.

Can IBV value a Townsville business without a local office?

Yes. IBV serves Townsville remotely through document review and scheduled discussions. Scope includes identifying evidence that cannot be established from records alone and agreeing how it will be addressed. IBV does not claim Townsville premises or provide expert-witness or court-appointed valuations.

Which valuation suits a Townsville restructure or partner change?

These purposes require at least Limited Scope Conclusion of Value, even when the initial discussion is for personal planning. Define the ownership interest, intended users, date and relevant agreements with your advisers. The final engagement is confirmed before work starts, not by turnover alone.
