An independent value for your Wollongong business
If you are negotiating a sale, changing ownership or preparing tax-related instructions, the value needs to relate to a defined business interest and date. IBV™ provides Wollongong owners and their advisers with independent business valuations that explain the evidence, assumptions and reasoning—not an unexplained multiple applied to the latest profit.
You work directly with Dr Patrick Hillenbrand, AVI Certified Business Valuer. We confirm who will rely on the report before recommending the engagement. Your signed conclusion carries the IBV™ Independence Guarantee: the professional fee is not linked to the value concluded. We are not bound by APES 225 but voluntarily adhere to its valuation guidance.
Connect Illawarra context to the actual business
The NSW Illawarra Shoalhaven Regional Plan describes an economy involving manufacturing, knowledge services, health, research and the visitor economy, with important roles for Wollongong and Port Kembla. This setting can shape a business's customers, workforce and operating requirements. It does not establish a standard Wollongong valuation multiple.
An industrial maintenance supplier, a university-linked technical business and a coastal hospitality venue generate earnings in different ways. We investigate the sources of revenue and the costs needed to sustain them. A business may supply a major industrial customer while another serves residents or clients outside the region; the evidence must reflect that distinction.
Regional renewal and proposed investment can create opportunities. Unless those opportunities have become demonstrable business activity, they should not be treated as transferable goodwill or secured future profit.
Investigate industrial customer and contract dependence
For engineering, freight or industrial service businesses, identify major customers, contract terms and the work actually awarded. Separate recurring maintenance from one-off projects and uncommitted tenders. Review renewal history, termination rights and any consent required when ownership changes. A familiar customer name does not remove contract risk.
For example, an illustrative Wollongong supplier might report strong earnings from a major customer's shutdown project. That result needs to be examined against the frequency of similar work, mobilisation costs and normal margins. Treating an exceptional project as annual recurring income could overstate maintainable earnings. This example describes a valuation question, not an IBV client engagement.
Review payment terms, retentions and work in progress alongside profit. A growing order book can require more cash to fund wages, materials and subcontractors before collection. Explain normal working-capital needs and distinguish operating business value from the amount an owner might receive after debt and transaction adjustments.

A clear valuation conclusion starts with an agreed purpose, relevant evidence and disclosed assumptions. The report identifies the interest valued and explains the reasoning behind its conclusion.
Assess equipment, premises and operating continuity
Industrial and logistics businesses may depend on specialised equipment, access arrangements or a particular site. Prepare an asset register, finance details and maintenance records. Establish whether current earnings require replacement expenditure and whether operations could continue if an important facility became unavailable.
Port proximity or a strategic address is not an automatic valuation premium. Document the actual access, customer arrangements and cost advantages, if any. If the property is held separately, use a clearly stated occupancy assumption and identify any separate specialist property work required. Do not combine land value, plant value and goodwill without reconciling what the valuation already includes.
A practical handover also requires people and systems. Identify technical approvals, supplier knowledge and customer relationships controlled by the departing owner. Continuing management and technical duties need realistic replacement costs; owner remuneration is not automatically removable from expenses.
Test the transferability of knowledge and service income
Professional, research-related and technology businesses can hold value in recurring client work, staff capability and intellectual property. Establish which rights belong to the business, whether agreements can continue and how revenue is earned. A research collaboration or promising prototype is not the same as a commercial contract with proven margins.
Separate founder reputation from transferable processes and relationships. Review client retention, staff responsibilities, licences and delivery obligations. For hospitality or visitor-facing operators, apply the same evidence discipline to monthly sales, bookings, lease conditions and staffing across complete trading cycles. Coastal appeal cannot explain away a weak lease or unsupported earnings adjustment.
Prepare your records and agree the intended use
Gather recent financial statements, current management accounts, ownership details, major contracts, leases and equipment records. Explain one-off projects, related-party charges and material changes in operations. If accounts are incomplete, tell us early: reconciliations and alternative supporting records may be needed before a conclusion is possible.
For sale negotiations, see our selling-a-business valuations. A partnership buyout valuation identifies the interest being transferred and relevant agreements. Our family law valuation service provides advisory business-value evidence; it does not include expert-witness or court-appointed work. Tax and legal advice remain with your professional advisers.
Our Fixed Professional Fees are agreed before work begins. Calculated Value is $2,450 + GST for eligible personal planning only; Limited Scope Conclusion of Value is $4,950 + GST and is most common. Shareholder changes, tax and family law require at least Limited Scope. Full Conclusion is quoted on instructions. Fees are payable on signing. Calculated and Limited Scope generally take 5–7 business days after complete information and signed engagement; Full Conclusion timing is agreed individually.
We serve Wollongong remotely through document review and scheduled discussions, without a local office. A valuation does not guarantee a sale price or acceptance by an authority. Start with your purpose, intended users and deadline.

Frequently asked questions
How does Port Kembla customer dependence affect a Wollongong valuation?
Examine the business's actual customer concentration, contract terms, margins and ability to replace work. Regional industrial importance does not eliminate the risk of losing a major agreement. Assess documented dependencies rather than applying an automatic premium or discount.
Can a major Wollongong shutdown project be treated as recurring earnings?
Only where recurrence and comparable economics are supported. Review project frequency, mobilisation, resources and ordinary margins against the wider trading history. One profitable shutdown or construction job should not automatically become assumed annual income.
How is port access considered for a Wollongong logistics business?
Identify the actual rights, site arrangements, customer commitments and cost effects. Proximity alone is insufficient. Review whether access and operational benefits can continue after an ownership change and disclose material assumptions rather than treating a strategic address as self-proving goodwill.
What if a Wollongong industrial business owns its premises?
Define whether the instruction covers the operating business, the property or both. State the occupancy assumption used in earnings and identify any separate specialist property evidence. Combined figures must be reconciled so land, productive assets and goodwill are not counted twice.
How are university-linked or research-related businesses valued in Wollongong?
Establish the commercial agreements, intellectual-property rights, staff dependencies and actual revenue. A collaboration or prototype does not prove recurring profits. Distinguish business-controlled rights and transferable contracts from founder relationships or prospective funding.
Do Illawarra renewal plans justify a higher business valuation?
Plans provide background, not proof of a particular business's future cash flow. Identify whether opportunities have become awarded work or demonstrated customer demand, and assess the costs and timing required to benefit. Do not capitalise a regional announcement as business earnings.
What working-capital evidence does a Wollongong engineering business need?
Provide receivables, retentions, work-in-progress records, supplier terms and remaining project commitments. Review monthly balances rather than relying on one year-end snapshot. The purpose is to understand normal funding requirements alongside maintainable earnings.
How is a Wollongong coastal hospitality business's seasonal profit assessed?
Compare complete trading cycles using monthly sales, bookings, costs and staffing. Separate recurring demand from an exceptional event and examine lease continuity. Coastal appeal does not substitute for evidence of sustainable margins or necessary management costs.
Can IBV assist with a Wollongong family law business valuation?
Yes, with an agreed advisory valuation scope and at least Limited Scope Conclusion of Value. Your solicitor confirms the intended use, date and interest. IBV does not undertake expert-witness or court-appointed work, and the report does not promise acceptance by a court or another party.
Do I need to visit an IBV office in Wollongong?
No. IBV has no Wollongong office and serves owners remotely through document review and scheduled discussions with Dr Patrick Hillenbrand, AVI Certified Business Valuer. The information needed and any separate specialist evidence are discussed before engagement.
